Vomiting & Diarrhea Guidelines | Rochester MN Veterinarians
For vomiting, with or without diarrhea:
- No water or food until at least 12 hours AFTER the last episode of vomiting.
- After withholding food and water for an extended period of time, offer very small (less than ΒΌ cup) amounts of water every 2-3 hours.
- As long as vomiting does not return, gradually increase the amount of water given at a time working up to offering water free choice.
- Go on to the next section.
For diarrhea alone, or once vomiting has resolved:
- No food or treats until 12 - 24 hours AFTER the last episode of diarrhea. Water can be given free choice, as long as there is no vomiting.
- After withholding food for an extended period of time, start with a bland diet every 2-3 hours. The bland diet may be purchased here or made at home. Bland diet choices: cooked white rice combined with either cooked hamburger drained of grease, plain cooked scrambled eggs, or skinless, boneless chicken cooked without any spices or fats.
- During the next 3 days, gradually increase the amount of food given each time and decrease the frequency of feedings.
- After 3 days on the bland diet with no vomiting or diarrhea, slowly mix in the regular dog food. Take at least 3 days to transition back to the normal diet.
In summary:
**Be patient- this whole process can take several days. Do not progress to the next step if the diarrhea or vomiting continues.
**Call the clinic if the vomiting or diarrhea do not resolve, or if your pet becomes weak, lethargic, or in any other way appears to get worse.
